DeWitt Smith was trained as an artist and potter at Valdosta State College, Georgia. There he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and ceramics. After a brief time working professionally as a potter he attended graduate school at the University of Georgia, Athens, receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree in ceramics in 1982.
DeWitt Pottery was established as the business under which DeWitt's work is sold in 1983. The interior design trade offers the greatest potential for sales to a wholesale market and DeWitt's work found immediate success within this avenue of marketing. Propelled by the handmade quality, the shapes inspired from many cultures, and the fact that each piece can blend harmoniously or be presented in such a way as to have obvious presence, his pieces have sold internationally as well as to notable private collectors.
DeWitt Pottery also produces functional pottery in stoneware and porcelain. These pots are made by a process used for centuries. Handmade pottery is continuing to be made and be a part of our lives despite the development of more durable substances from which utilitarian vessels can be formed. One reason is the more durable substances, and industrial ceramics, are mundane in appearance. The potters' craft brings one-of-a-kind artwork into close contact with us. That contact gives us tactile sensation as well as visual exhilaration. We actually put our mouths on drinking vessels; something that intimate should be given consideration.

After graduate school DeWitt Pottery was established as the business under which my work is sold. The wholesale interior design trade offers great potential for sales and exposure to a reliable market.  Through this market there have been international sales, as well as to notable private collectors, such as: Halle Berry, John Mellencamp, Elton John, Lamar Dodd, Vince and Barbara Dooley.
Currently, I am developing a visual "language" in functional ware which has opened new avenues of creative exploration.
